Hi everyone! My name is Annie Wei and I am currently a freshman majoring in Business at Questrom. I haven’t formally declared my concentrations yet, but I have a strong interest in Marketing, Operations Management, and also a potential minor in the school of Hospitality.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, I was brought up amongst a lot of great food, diverse cultures, and the hustle and bustle of a heavily tourism-influenced city. Although I grew up around the myriad of stores and businesses that targeted tourists with overpriced goods, I never understood why despite knowing they were getting ripped off, tourists still flocked into these stores by the masses to purchase things that could be bought from another less well known store across the street for half the price. My experience with marketing is limited, however, working as a social hostess on an intergenerational tour group this past summer helped me to get a slightly better understanding of the importance and influence of marketing on consumers.
As the social hostess of this group, I was both a tour guide and a point of reference for answering any questions group members had about the island. As such, I was also responsible for providing recommendations when needed about certain places to visit or activities to do in the group’s spare time. Traveling throughout the island I had known as “home” for the past 18 years and presenting it from a different, more informative and objective perspective allowed me to pick up on smaller things that I generally overlooked in businesses. One thing I learned was that a slight difference in the marketing and advertising of a product truly can impact a consumer’s decision of whether or not to purchase that product (regardless of price).
In all honesty, I still don’t know that much about marketing (or anything else in business for that matter), but I am eager to learn and look forward to working with the members of BUMKC by collaborating with our great clients this semester!
